Play Old Maid free online — the classic children’s matching game. Discard your pairs, draw from the next player, and don’t get stuck holding the unmatched Queen. No download or sign-up.
Overview
Old Maid is a simple, fast matching game that has entertained families for generations. It is played with a regular deck that has one Queen removed, so three Queens remain and one of them can never be paired. Nobody wants to be the player left holding that odd Queen at the end — the ‘Old Maid’.
How to play
Before play, the Queen of Spades is removed, so one Queen cannot be matched. The cards are dealt out, and to start, every player throws away any pairs they already hold, placing them face down. Then, in turn, each player draws one hidden card from the next active player clockwise. If the drawn card completes a pair with a card in your hand, you discard that pair immediately.
Winning and losing
Play continues — drawing a card, then discarding any new pair — until every possible pair has been made and only the single unmatched Queen is left. Whoever is holding that last Queen is the Old Maid and loses the game; everyone else has successfully emptied their hand.
Strategy and tips
There is a good deal of luck, but a little bluffing helps. When another player draws from your hand, arrange your cards so the odd Queen is not obviously placed, and keep a neutral reaction whichever card they take. If you are forced to hold the Queen, shed your other cards quickly so you are ready to pass it on at the first chance.
Controls
Select two matching cards to discard them as a pair, then pass when you have no more pairs. On your turn to draw, pick one of the hidden cards offered by the next player. The game tells you when a selection is not a valid pair.
