Overview
Pinochle is a trick-taking card game played with a special 48-card deck — only the 9, Jack, Queen, King, 10 and Ace of each suit, with two copies of every card. Its card ranking is unusual: the Ace is highest, then the 10, then King, Queen, Jack and 9. Two things make Pinochle distinctive: you win points both by taking valuable cards in tricks and by declaring ‘melds’ — scoring combinations — from your hand. This version offers a two-player game, a four-player partnership game, and online multiplayer.
How to play
Each player is dealt 12 cards, and the next card is turned face up to set the trump suit, then slipped under the remaining stock. In the first phase you play tricks but are not yet required to follow suit — any trump beats any card of another suit. After you win a trick you draw the top card of the stock and your opponent draws next, so your hand stays at 12 cards throughout this phase.
Melds
Winning a trick also earns you the right to declare one meld — a scoring combination such as a marriage (King and Queen of a suit), a pinochle (Queen of Spades with Jack of Diamonds), or an ‘around’ set such as all four Aces. The cards stay in your hand and can still be played to tricks, so the timing of your melds is part of the skill. In the four-player partnership game you first pass four cards to your partner.
The end phase
When the stock runs out the rules tighten, and no more drawing or melding is allowed. Now you must follow the suit that was led; if you cannot follow suit you must play a trump; and if a trump was led and you hold trump, you must play a higher one. These forcing rules turn the final tricks into a tense battle for the counters — the Aces, 10s and Kings that carry the point value.
Strategy and tips
Save your high trumps for the strict end phase, where they capture the most valuable counters. Hold your marriages until you have won a trick and can declare them. Watch for pinochle and around-meld combinations as you decide which cards to keep. In the partnership game, pass cards that complete your partner’s likely melds rather than only your own.

Your twelve cards sit in a row you can scroll by dragging; on your turn the playable cards lift up and you tap one to play it. When prompted, choose a meld or skip, and in the four-player game tap the four cards you want to pass. Use the menu to pick two-player, four-player, or online play.
