Overview
Loopedout is a fast pattern-finding puzzle filled with colorful creatures called Guulps. Connect neighboring Guulps of the same color and close the path into a loop. A successful loop clears its group, creates room for new pieces, and adds to your score. Challenge Run presents a sequence of level targets, while Score Attack lets you chase your best total.Every match-3 relies on the same move
I probably made and played tens of match 3 puzzles before — Bejeweled, Candy Crush and the rest — but they all rely on the same actions, just interchange one place to create a match. I thought, what if a deeper and more satisfying mechanic can be developed, where the player is challenged more to think out of the box and create a match.
I knew the risks of a new mechanic. Making the player think harder to create a simple match, the game may become obscure to people!! But then I thought hell why not — if it is interesting it will find its audience some day, or it will remain ahead of its time.
So what is this new mechanic?
I wanted it simple, yet to do more in terms of causing the movement on the board. New yet known — and then I saw the lock pattern locking on mobile devices!! Boom, this is my mechanic, exactly what I was looking for. What if I make a chain or loop, and every piece covered in that chain moves? I made it, tried it, and it worked amazingly.
Then came the Guulps
And that is how Loopedout was born. I created these characters and named them “Guulps”, and they came out fantastically. My wife, who is an artist, made all of the creature art and animations.
They come in all different characteristics. Some of them are shy and cannot be touched or moved, some get angry and burn themselves making the board space unusable, and some actually help you as wildcards.
