Overview
FreeCell is a solitaire game of almost pure skill. It uses one standard 52-card deck, and every card is dealt face up into eight tableau columns — nothing is hidden. With four ‘free cells’ to park cards temporarily, the great majority of deals can be solved through careful planning rather than luck.
Goal
Move all 52 cards to the four foundations, building each suit upward from Ace through King.
Tableau rules
- Build downward in alternating colours.
- Any single card may be placed into an empty tableau column.
- An ordered run can move together only when you have enough free cells and empty columns to relocate it one card at a time.
Using the free cells
- Each of the four free cells holds exactly one card.
- Use them to temporarily lift a card that is blocking the one you need.
- The more free cells and empty columns you keep open, the longer the runs you can move in one motion.
Strategy and tips
- Free your Aces and low cards early so the foundations can get started.
- Do not fill all four free cells unless you already see how to empty one again.
- Work toward an empty column; it dramatically increases how many cards you can shift at once.
- Because every card is visible, take your time and plan the whole sequence.
