Canfield Solitaire

Play the classic casino-style solitaire challenge, balancing the reserve, tableau, and limited stock redeals.

Overview
Canfield is a classic one-deck solitaire with a colourful history and a well-earned reputation for being hard to beat. It began life in the gambling halls of Canfield’s casino, where players paid for the deck and were paid back for every card they managed to get home — a deal the house rarely lost, which tells you how tough the game is. Its layout is distinctive: a thirteen-card ‘reserve’ known as the demon feeds four tableau columns, and the very first card played sets the starting rank for all four foundations, so every deal begins differently. Add a stock you may recycle only a limited number of times, and the result is a solitaire where many deals simply cannot be solved — which is exactly the point. Winning feels like beating the odds. For players who find the more solvable solitaires too gentle, Canfield offers a genuine, luck-tinged challenge wrapped in a piece of gambling history.
About Canfield

Canfield is a one-deck solitaire game with four tableau columns and a 13-card reserve, traditionally called the demon.

Goal

Move all 52 cards to four foundations. The first foundation card sets the starting rank for every foundation.

Foundation rules
  • Build upward by suit from the starting rank.
  • Ranks wrap around: a King may be followed by an Ace.
  • Each foundation must begin with the same starting rank.
Tableau and reserve
  • Build tableau columns downward in alternating colors, with ranks wrapping from Ace to King.
  • Properly ordered tableau sequences may move together.
  • The top reserve card is always available, and empty columns are automatically filled from the reserve when possible.
Stock and controls
  • Turn cards from the stock onto the waste and use the top waste card.
  • The stock may be recycled only while the game allows another pass.
  • Drag cards, or tap a card and choose a highlighted destination. Undo restores earlier moves.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canfield free to play? Yes — free in your browser, no sign-up. Why is it so hard? The limited redeals and the awkward reserve mean many deals cannot be fully solved. What sets the foundation rank? The first foundation card dealt; every foundation then starts on that rank and wraps King-to-Ace. How many decks? One standard 52-card deck.
