Overview
Yacht is a five-dice scoring game. Each turn you roll up to three times, keeping whichever dice you want between rolls, then commit the result to one of twelve categories. Every category can be used only once, so the game is exactly twelve turns per player. On the web you play solo against a computer opponent.
Taking a turn
Roll all five dice, then choose which to hold and reroll the rest — up to three rolls in total. When you are done, assign the dice to an unused category and take its score.
You must fill a category every turn. If nothing scores, you have to enter a zero somewhere, which is the main pressure in the back half of the game.
The twelve categories
- Ones to Sixes — the sum of dice showing that number. Four 5s in Fives scores 20.
- Choice — the sum of all five dice, whatever they are.
- Four of a Kind — four times the repeated face, not the sum of the hand. Four 6s scores 24.
- Full House — three of one face and two of another; scores the sum of all five dice.
- Small Straight — four consecutive faces; a flat 30.
- Big Straight — five consecutive faces; a flat 40.
- Yacht — all five dice the same; a flat 50.
Two scoring details worth knowing
Four of a Kind pays the four matching dice only. The fifth die is ignored, so there is no benefit to it being high — unlike Full House, which counts all five.
There is no upper-section bonus. Ones through Sixes are scored purely on their own totals, with no extra award for reaching a threshold across them. That makes the fixed-value categories — the straights and Yacht — a larger share of a strong game than in variants that pay a bonus.
Winning
After twelve turns each, every category is filled and the highest total wins. A Yacht at 50 is worth more than any two number categories combined, so the swing on a single lucky turn is large.
