Mendicot

Team up with the player opposite you, choose trump, capture tens, and outplay the opposing partnership.

Overview
Mendikot — also spelled Mendicot — is a classic Indian trick-taking game played in fixed partnerships, hugely popular across households in western India. You and the player sitting directly opposite form a team against the other two, all using a standard 52-card deck. What sets Mendikot apart from ordinary trick games is its prize: you are not simply trying to win the most tricks, but to capture the four Tens, which are the cards that actually decide the game. Choosing trump wisely from your opening hand and then working with your partner — reading which tricks to take and which Tens to protect or steal — is the whole art of it. Capturing all four Tens is the celebrated ‘mendikot’ that gives the game its name. It is a warm, social game built for four, where partnership signals, memory and a bit of tactical sacrifice matter far more than simply holding the highest cards.
About Mendicot

Mendicot is a four-player Indian trick-taking game for two partnerships. You and the player opposite form one team; the left and right players form the other.

Deal and trump
  • A standard 52-card deck is dealt among four players.
  • After the opening five cards, choose a trump suit from the suits represented in your hand.
  • Trump cards beat cards from every non-trump suit.
Playing a trick
  • The leader plays any card.
  • Other players must follow the led suit when possible; otherwise they may play any card.
  • The highest card of the led suit wins unless trump is played, in which case the highest trump wins.
  • The trick winner leads next.
Tens and winning
  • The four tens are the most important scoring cards.
  • The first partnership to capture at least three tens wins the round.
  • If neither team captures three tens, the team winning at least seven of the thirteen tricks wins.
