Overview
Euchre is a fast four-player partnership trick-taking game played with a short 24-card deck. You and your partner play against the other two, and the first team to 10 points wins. Its signature features are the bowers — two Jacks that become the strongest trumps — and a brisk bidding round in which one team ‘calls’ the trump suit and then tries to win most of the five tricks.
How to play
The deck holds only the 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace of each suit. Each player is dealt five cards and one extra card, the kitty, is turned face up. In the first round of bidding, players may ‘order up’ the kitty’s suit as trump. If everyone passes, a second round lets players name any other suit, and if all pass again the dealer is forced to choose a suit.
Bowers and trick play
Once trump is set, the right bower — the Jack of the trump suit — becomes the single highest card in the game. The left bower — the Jack of the other suit of the same colour — also counts as trump, ranking just below the right bower. Follow the led suit when you can, remembering that the left bower belongs to trump rather than its printed suit. The highest trump wins the trick; otherwise the highest card of the led suit wins.
Scoring
The team that called trump scores one point for taking three or four tricks and two points for sweeping all five. If the calling team fails to win at least three tricks, they are ‘euchred’ and the defending team scores two points instead. That penalty is what makes calling trump a genuine gamble rather than a free choice.
Strategy and tips
Only call trump when you hold a bower or a cluster of trumps. Your partner sits across from you, so play low when they are already winning a trick and save your strong trumps for when they matter. Leading a trump early can strip it from the opponents, but count how many are still unseen before you commit. When defending, work to euchre the callers by holding up your winners.
Controls
When prompted, order up the up-card, name a suit, or pass. If you take the up-card as dealer, choose one card to discard. On your turn, tap a card then tap Play; the game enforces following suit, including the left bower’s trump status.
