Overview
Gulam Chor — literally ‘Jack Thief’ — is a beloved Indian family card game, closely related to Old Maid. It is played with a standard 52-card deck, and the whole game turns on a single unlucky card: with one Jack set aside, three Jacks remain and one can never be paired. Discard your pairs, keep the game moving, and make sure you are not the player caught holding that last odd Jack — the Gulam Chor.
How to play
The player holding the Jack of Spades opens the game by discarding it, which leaves one Jack that can never find a partner. To begin, every player throws away any pairs they already hold, placing them face down. Then, in turn, each player draws one hidden card from the next active player sitting clockwise, and if the drawn card completes a pair in their hand, that pair is discarded at once.
Winning and losing
Play continues — drawing a card, then discarding any new pair — until every possible pair has been made and only the single unmatched Jack remains. Whoever is left holding that last Jack is the Gulam Chor and loses the round; everyone else has safely emptied their hand.
Strategy and tips
Much of the game is luck, but presentation matters. When another player draws from your hand, keep the odd Jack unremarkable among your cards and hold a steady expression whichever card they reach for. If you are stuck with the Jack, clear your other cards quickly so you are ready to pass it on the moment you can.
Controls
Select two matching cards to discard them as a pair, then pass when you have no more pairs. On your turn to draw, pick one of the hidden cards offered by the next player. The game tells you when a selection is not a valid pair.
