Overview
Forty Thieves is one of the most famous — and most notoriously difficult — two-deck solitaires, a game that has tested patience players for well over a century. Its name comes from the forty cards that begin face up in ten tableau columns, like forty thieves lined up to be tamed, while the remaining sixty-four cards wait in the stock. Everything about it is designed to resist you: you may build tableau sequences only in the same suit, you can move just a single card at a time rather than whole runs, and there is no redeal, so your one pass through the stock has to count. That combination makes Forty Thieves a game of careful, deliberate planning rather than quick reflexes — every card sent to a foundation or buried in a column matters, and a hasty move early can lock the game beyond recovery. Winning is genuinely satisfying precisely because it is uncommon, which is why this austere old solitaire has kept a devoted following for generations.
About Forty Thieves

Forty Thieves uses two standard decks. Forty face-up cards begin in ten tableau columns, while the remaining 64 cards form the stock.

Goal

Move all 104 cards to eight foundations. Build each foundation upward by suit from Ace through King.

Tableau rules
  • Build downward by suit.
  • Only the top card of a column may be moved; sequences cannot move together.
  • Any single card may fill an empty column.
  • Only uncovered tableau cards are available for play.
Stock and waste
  • Tap the stock to turn one card face up onto the waste.
  • The top waste card may move to a tableau column or foundation.
  • There is no redeal: you get one pass through the stock.
Controls and strategy
  • Drag a card, or tap it and choose a highlighted destination.
  • Use Undo to restore earlier moves, or New Game for a fresh deal.
  • Open empty columns carefully and avoid blocking low cards beneath high ones.
