Overview
Mongoose is a fast, real-time family card game about spotting the right play before anyone else — and before you slip up. Each player works through their own closed pile, flipping cards and trying to shed them onto shared stacks in the middle or onto opponents’ piles. Miss a legal play and the table shouts ‘Mongoose!’ and you collect a penalty. The first player to empty their hand wins; the last one still holding cards is the Mongoose.
How to play
Flip the top card of your closed pile. If it fits, play it onto a centre stack or onto any opponent’s open pile; if there is nowhere legal to put it, drop it on your own open pile and your turn ends. The aim is to keep finding legal plays and clear your cards faster than everyone else.
Legal plays
A flipped card can start or extend a centre stack, and it can be played onto an opponent’s open pile if it is exactly one rank above or one rank below the card on top of their pile. Always check both possibilities — the centre stacks and every opponent’s pile — before giving up and dropping the card on your own pile.
Calling Mongoose
This is the trap. If you dump a card on your own pile when a legal play was actually available, the table screams ‘Mongoose!’ and every opponent passes you one of their closed cards as a penalty, setting you back. Because of this, raw speed is not enough — you have to be sure there was truly no legal move before you end your turn.
Strategy and tips
Scan the opponents’ open piles as their cards change, not only the centre stacks, since a play that was illegal a moment ago may have just opened up. When you have a choice, prefer plays that get rid of cards you are most likely to be stuck with. Above all, slow down just enough to avoid the Mongoose penalty — collecting extra cards hurts far more than missing one quick play.

Tap your closed pile to flip the top card, then tap a centre stack or an opponent’s open pile to play it. If there is genuinely no legal play, tap your own open pile to set the card down and pass the turn.
