Robo Hockey

Overview

Robo Hockey is a fast field-hockey game for one player against the computer. You pick a national side from 24 countries, in the men’s or women’s game, and play a full match end to end — carrying the ball, passing, shooting and tackling.

A match runs six minutes: two halves of three, with a break at halftime. That is short enough to finish in a coffee break and long enough that a two-goal lead can disappear.

The whole match is played on one screen with a live scoreboard and clock, so there is no menu-hopping between phases — you are on the pitch from the first whistle.

How a match works

• Two halves of three minutes, with a halftime break showing the score at the interval.
• Goals are scored from open play; the scoreboard tracks both sides throughout.
• At full time the higher score wins. Draws are possible — there is no shootout.

Because the clock is short, tempo matters more than possession. Six minutes does not leave room to patiently build twenty passes; a turnover in your own half is often a goal against.

Controls

On touch devices you steer with a virtual joystick and use three action buttons: Pass, Shoot and Tackle. The layout can be flipped for left- or right-handed play from the settings.

On desktop the keyboard covers the same actions:

• Space or J — shoot
• X, E or K — pass
• Z, Q or L — scoop
• Esc or P — pause

The scoop is the one worth learning. Passing and shooting keep the ball low, where a defender’s stick can intercept it; the scoop lifts it over. Against a packed defence it is often the only way through.

Teams

Twenty-four national sides are available, each in its own colours: the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, Argentina, India, Spain, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, China, the USA, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Ireland and South Africa.

Every side is selectable in both the men’s and women’s game.

Quick Match and the Nations Cup

Quick Match is a single game against an opponent of your choosing. Play it, get a result, done.

Nations Cup is a knockout run, and it is unforgiving:

• Quarterfinal — lose and the tournament is over immediately.
• Semifinal — win and you go to the final; lose and you drop to the third-place match.
• Final or third-place playoff — one game to finish.

So the shortest possible run is one match and the longest is three. There is no group stage and no second chance in the quarterfinal, which makes the opening game the tensest of the cup.

Tips

• Score early. With three-minute halves, a goal in the first minute is worth more than it would be in a real match — there is very little time to chase.
• Use the scoop over a crowd. A low shot into traffic gets blocked; lifting it is what beats a set defence.
• Pass out of pressure, do not dribble out. A tackle in your own third is the most expensive mistake available.
• Tackle on the approach, not on the shot. Committing late leaves the shooter free.
• Set your hand before the quarterfinal. The control layout flips in settings; discovering it mid-tournament costs you a match.
• Take a draw when you need one. A level score is a real outcome here, and protecting it beats conceding on the break.
