Mille

Play Mille against the computer: a two-player rummy game from Montreal with wild twos, valuable discard piles and a race to 1,200 points.

How to play Mille

Two full packs are shuffled together, making 104 cards with no jokers. Each player receives fifteen cards. The next card starts the discard pile, and the non-dealer plays first. Build sets of matching ranks and empty your hand before the computer does.

Sets and wild twos

A new set needs three or more cards of the same rank. Twos are wild, so 8-8-2 and Q-2-2 are legal sets. Three twos can also form their own set. There are no runs. You have one set per rank and can add to your own sets, but cannot rearrange them or add to the computer’s sets.

Your turn

Draw one card from the stock, or take the discard pile. You may then meld as many sets and additions as you like. Finish by discarding one card. Emptying your hand ends the hand immediately, whether you meld your last card or discard it.

Taking the discard pile

You need two cards from your hand that form a set with the top discard. Those three cards go onto your table; the rest of the pile goes into your hand. A two on top requires two more twos. As an opening exception, if the first card turned up after the deal is a two, the non-dealer can take it into hand alone instead of drawing.

Card values

  • Queen of spades: 100 points.
  • Jack of diamonds: 50 points.
  • Twos: 20 points each; aces: 15.
  • Other tens and court cards: 10 points each.
  • Threes through nines: 5 points each.

Scoring and naturals

The player who goes out scores the cards in their sets. The other player scores their sets minus the value still held in hand; a negative hand score is a chapeau. A set containing all eight cards of a rank without wild twos counts double. Going out without any wild twos in your sets doubles all your melded cards again. A set of twos counts as natural.

Continue dealing until someone reaches 1,200 points. The higher total wins; if the totals are tied, play continues. This version uses points only.
